Since the patent for the brand name drug Zovirax has expired, a generic version of the drug is now available without a prescription. Generic Zovirax is still used to treat the symptoms of such viruses such as chickenpox, shingles and herpes.
Brand name Zovirax contains the active ingredient acyclovir, the same active ingredient as generic Zovirax. It is used to treat skin infections with the herpes simplex virus, such as cold sores and genital herpes (caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2). Although a cure for herpes has yet to be discovered, Zovirax eases symptoms by encouraging the sores to dry out and to disappear more quickly. Zovirax can also be used to prevent an anticipated outbreak.
Acyclovir works by stopping the herpes simplex virus from reproducing and infecting more cells. Acyclovir is converted to a more active form inside cells of the body that are infected with herpes simplex. The activated acyclovir then works by blocking the action of a viral enzyme called DNA polymerase. The herpes virus needs the DNA polymerase enzyme to copy its genetic material from RNA to DNA. This process is necessary for the virus to multiply and continue to survive. By blocking the action of DNA polymerase, acyclovir prevents the herpes virus from multiplying. This controls the infection and helps the immune system to deal with it.
So is generic Zovirax as good as the original? The short answer is yes, according to the FDA. All generic medications undergo a variety of tests to compare them to brand name medications. The Food and Drug Administration then looks at the tests to determine if the generic versions are equivalent to the brand name medications and assigns each a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that the generic medication is equivalent to the brand name medication. All generic Zovirax medications available have an "AB" rating, meaning they are considered to be equal to the original, brand name Zovirax.
However, according to the FDA, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients form the brand name version. These inactive ingredients may include fillers, dyes or other ingredients which may cause problems for people who have certain allergies or sensitivities. Currently, there is no generic Zovirax Cream available.
Generic Zovirax is available in two strengths: 400 mg tablets and 800 mg tablets. Generic Zovirax capsules are available in 200 mg only.
If acyclovir is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining generic or brand name Zovirax with the following: Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral), Interferon (Roferon-A), Probenecid (Benemid) or Zidovudine (Retrovir).
If you are being treated for a kidney disorder, consult your doctor before taking Zovirax. The drug has been known to cause kidney failure.
If you develop unusual bruising or bleeding under the skin, be sure to alert your doctor. It could signal a dangerous blood disorder.
